Drunk Driving Statistics : Looking Back as 2009 Comes To an End

Drunk Driving Statistics : Looking Back as 2009 Comes To an End

We have covered drunk driving quite extensively on this blog for one reason and one reason only - drunk driving kills and its something that needs to be often reminded. Although there are thousands of deaths each year due to drunk driving, many people ignore the fact that while driving intoxicated, they are taking chance against their lives and someone else. We love to drink and that’s one of the reason we run one of the most successful alcohol blog which of course revolves around our favorite drink cognac. However, when it comes to stopping someone from driving drunk, we wouldn’t hesitate tying them on a chair and waiting till they sober up before we let them drive. We are ready to face consequences cause the consequences can’t be as bad as losing a friend to drunk driving.

We have talked quite a bit about drunk driving and before the year ends, we wanted to take a look back at it once again. Below are the numbers of drunk driving related death for 2007, 2008 and for 2009 so far. The very first time we covered drunk driving on this blog was back in March and the number of drunk driving deaths at that time was 2,670. Although we all hoped that the number wouldn’t change, they have changed dramatically which shows that drunk driving is an issue that is far from over yet. Here are the number of deaths for 2007, 2008 and 2009

2007 : 12,998

2008 : 11, 773

2009 : 11, 769

The above numbers aren’t just accidents but the total number of alcohol related deaths. In some cases the drunk driver was killed and in others the driver might have taken the life of someone else due to their stupid decision. As you can see alcohol related deaths were less in 2008 as compared to 2007 but seems like the trend is increasing again. By the time you read this post, we will have passed the 2008 numbers and will be heading fast to beat the 2007 numbers. And if the increase in drunk driving death for this year is any indication, we can almost guarantee it will pass 2007 and we will be looking at over 13,000 drunk driving death before this year ends. Sad indeed.

So how can we put an end to drunk driving? The harsh truth is – we can’t. There’s always going to be that one person who isn’t going to care. There’s always going to be one person who thinks he is headed home only to find out he is taking his last breaths. Let’s face it, we can’t put an end to drunk driving, but what we can do is create awareness as much as possible. To our children that are growing up being influenced by TV shows and stardom, we need to assure them that what might look cool on TV isn’t really all that wise of a decision. All we can do is create awareness of the possible dangers and hope for the best. We wish drunk driving would come to an end, but just as you know it, we know it very well, this is not going to come to an end. The only thing that can be done is to reduce the deaths caused by drunk driving.

We just wanted to talk about drunk driving one more time before the year ends and wanted to show you how fast we are moving when it comes to alcohol related death. 2008 saw a decrease in numbers but it seems like we are going ahead full speed to beat both 2007 and 2008. Take a look at this video that we compiled earlier this year to see impacts of drunk driving,

We hope you all had a great thanksgiving day and we know most of you have it off of work for the next couple days. It’s Friday and it certainly is the weekend to gather up some friends and family for a little get together. All we can say is enjoy your drink and company but DO NOT drink and drive. Let’s make the most out of celebration. A celebration should never turn into a mourning so please do not even think about drunk driving. Let’s hope the numbers don’t increase and stays where it’s at because each number represents a human life. Let’s hope no more lives are lost to drunk driving.

Have a good weekend. Say NO to drunk driving.

I have a Twitter account and it is sad to see so few people follow my http://www.Twitter.com/TweetAgainstDWI account. …something so profound and important and it gets little love on Twitter

On November 1, 2009 another precious life was taken by a drunk driver who thought getting behind the wheel of his car while intoxicated was more important than any innocent lives he might take while doing so. My sweet girl was only 19. I will never see her graduate from college, become the teacher she wanted to be, marry a man who loves her, hold her babies in my arms or watch them grow. We must find a way to stop this madness. The loss is just too great!
