Seven Drinks That Will Trend in 2010

At Cognac.com, we think 2010 is going to be a year to remember—we hope it’s looking to be a great one for you. And as the year begins to take shape, we’ve been keeping our ear to the ground to hear what the experts are saying about what’s hot at the bars, restaurants, and dinner tables around the country.

Here’s a compilation of seven trends that are sure to find their way into a glass near you.

Classic Cocktails

After an economic crash sent post-modern mixology into a tailspin, expect people to find stability in the old standbys. Mintel Menu Insights predicts the restaurant industry as a whole to cling to the classics, so we’re keeping our eye on a legend: the Sidecar martini.

The Flavor of the Hibiscus Flower

Expect tropical flavors to find their way into your drinks, as Technomic predicts. But a new twist doesn’t have to mean you’re abandoning you’re old favorites. We recommend giving this Red Beret a try (with a splash of cognac, of course).

The Home Brew

The folks at Epicurious.com predict a surge in popularity for the homemade beer industry. Home brewing kits make it relatively easy for beer enthusiasts to impress their friends and add their own nuance to their ales. But it still takes a dedicated hobbyist to perfect the process. At your local tavern or favorite restaurant, expect to find plenty of microbrewery fares—but if you’d rather bring the brewery home, there are plenty of options available.

Gluten Free

Among the niche interests in America is the growing awareness about special nutritional needs, including over 2 million with gluten intolerance (celiac disease). But don’t be surprised by a popularity boost in sorghum-based beers like Bard’s Tale. For those who can’t do gluten, this beer is a life-saver, but many beer lovers will fall in love with it, too.

Vintage Wine

Buying wine from the people who traditionally sell it is in—although buying wine from the people who traditionally sell anything and everything is not yet out. According to SFGate.com, with wine merchants adjusting to a market full of customers who are used to convenience and service, getting a real wine recommendation instead of just grabbing a bottle from below the smiley-faced price cut sign is back en vogue.

Luxury Vodka

Frugality has been king since the economy tanked, but TheDrinksBusiness.com feels a resurgence coming on for people who want to live like high rollers. A new breed of vodka known as ultra-premium has the potential to take on new importance in the drinking game, as the public begins to realize that not all vodka is created equal. Will the old-world favorite regain contemporary prominence?

The Timeless Choice: Cognac

Let’s face it, you’re here at Cognac.com for a reason. Cognac is the best of the best, and when you want to enjoy a special moment, it’s gotta be your go-to drink. While we recognize, 2009 wasn’t necessarily a banner year for enjoying the finer things, the forecast coming out of SeriousEats.com for 2010 is for cognac to be back and better than ever. Yes, you can enjoy it in a cocktail, but nothing beats allowing cognac to stand on its own.
