Guide : Reading a Cognac Label

Before cognac can be sold to the public, it must be aged in oak barrels for at least two years. Knowing how to read a cognac label is extremely importan since it gives every bit of information on a cognac you are about to purchase.

According to BNIC (Bureau National Interprofessional du Cognac) cognac can be divided into three grades :

  1. V.S (Very Special) : Cognac whose youngest eau-de-vie is at least two years old.
  2. V.S.O.P (Very Superior Old Pale) : Cognac whose youngest eau-de-vie is at least four years old.
  3. X.O (Extra Old) : Cognac whose youngest eau-de-vie is at least six years old.
