A Small Gift From Us To You – Free Cognac

A Small Gift From Us To You – Free Cognac

We just launched this blog a couple weeks ago and we have yet to celebrate New Year with our readers and visitors. Since we are a bunch of cognac lovers here, we decided we would celebrate by giving away a free bottle of cognac for one lucky winner. Well, we can’t actually ship cognac itself due to all the legalities that surrounds alcohol, we will be giving away $100 to one winner either via Paypal or a VISA gift card. Once the winner is announced we will get in touch with the winner via email.

Although we are not shipping cognac by itself we would really appreciate if you used it for that purpose. If you are a cognac lover we are sure you will do so but if you are not, go ahead and give it a shot. There is always first time for everything and when someone else is paying for it, sometimes you just have to give it a go ;-) .

Now to the contest part. Its not really a contest but we would definitely appreciate if you could do us a favor. We are pretty passionate about cognac not only because it tastes good but because of the quality and the history that surrounds cognac. If you would like to win $100 please follow the instructions below :

For a chance to enter please do the following :

  1. Please comment (on the blog) why you like cognac. If you have never tried cognac before tell us why you would like to try.
  2. Subscribe to our feed using your email address (we need you to subscribe using your email so we can verify) . You can either do so by clicking on the link in the sidebar or simply by clicking here
  3. If you are on twitter please take a moment and follow us- @cognaclover

Those are the things that you need to do in order to be eligible to win the $100. But there is one more thing we would really appreciate if you could do for us – if you are using twitter please let others know about this contest, make sure to add #freecognac at the end of you tweet.

The winner will be announced based on their comment (and of course you have to subscribe using your email address and follow us on twitter).  When you leave your comments please make sure to leave your twitter profile so we can follow you back. And of course all commentators can follow each other as well which certainly will help us all build a community.

The winner will be announced on Monday here at cognac.com. Hope we can all have a little fun with this. Until then have a great weekend and goodluck.

note : If you are under the age of 21 please do not participate. We will make sure we choose a winner who is over 21 so back off ;-) .

update : we are not taking any more entries for this contest.

Ok–so I’ve never actually tried cognac–which is why I need to win! I do, however, have a ton of cool cognac glasses I inherited from my grandmother, and have always meant to try it. What better time than in front of the fireplace in the middle of winter, right?

    Fun contest–I’ll spread the word.

Never had cognac, besides a sip of my uncle’s when I was knee high to a toad stool. But damn, an inch of $100-a-bottle cognac in a nice snifter just purrs, “smell me, love me, indulge me.” I think it’s time to let a newbie indulge.

  3. Danny Brown says:

Hmm, why do I love cognac? I guess because a good cognac is the only liquor that can tempt me away from my beloved Loch Dhu single malt whisky. And it has to be something pretty special to compete with a $400 per bottle whisky…

    Slainte!

My husband loves cognac. He swears by this drink called the French Connection which I believe is made with Hennessy and Grand Marnier. Grand Marnier tastes great in maragaritas anf french martinis. People usually don’t use it in these drinks, but i highly recommend it.

never mind… suddenly the comment section just filled up! ;-)

My love of Cognac not only goes back many years, but it’s ‘part of family tradition’. You see my dad prided himself on having a very well stocked bar (3 in fact) – the primary purpose of which was to be sure that he could be the most hospitable host possible. (We still tell the story of the guest who took him up on his challenge and asked for Japanese Whiskey to which my dad replied ‘that would be in the downstairs bar’ and came back moments later with a bottle of Suntory Whiskey.

Despite all that selection the one luxury he bought just for himself was Cognac. And so from an early age I would see my dad have his one snifter of cognac in the evening as his reward at the end of a hard day. As one grows their palate develops slowly and appreciation of fine spirits is something often lost on the young. But thanks to watching how my dad savoured his cognac I became intrigued. So while I did the usual drinking to excess, cognac for me too became something special. My father allowed me to try his cognac and slowly I developed a taste – and not just for Cognac, but for certain brandies and Calvados as well. Still if it wasn’t for my dad periodically giving me a bottle of cognac as a gift, I wouldn’t have been able to afford it (especially during grad school!) so cognac also became more than just a drink, it became my father’s subtle way of helping me to grow up. Along the way I’ve had numerous kinds – with Otard XO and Chabasse XO standing out in my memory.

My tastes changed over the years and more often I found myself turning to some of the ultra-fine Tequilas and Irish Whiskys ahead of cognac. Curiously it was my wife that rekindled my interest in Cognac. Oddly enough she is affected by Cognac in the same way as I am. It is the only spirits that will leave us literally tongue tied rendering our speech noticeably slurred after only a couple of snifters. Of course all that does is inspire one to sip slowly and savour… and let the memories of Cognacs gone by come flooding back.

I’m a big whisk(e)y drinker – spent my semester abroad in Scotland, and came home loving it. ^_^ It’s been suggested that I’d enjoy cognac as well, but as yet have not had a chance to taste it. I heard about this through a few of the cocktail bloggers I follow, and figured that if they were participating, it had to be good!

  10. PRJack says:

p.s. I should point out that dad’s ‘bars’ weren’t public establishments… they were 3 separate locations all in the house! The credenza in the dining room had the after dinner liqueurs and Cognac. One cupboard in the kitchen had the wine and general spirits. Downstairs there was (and still is in all it’s 70s glory) a real bar complete with padded vinyl sides that housed the bulk of the collectable, noteworthy, unique, general use and downright odd things.

  11. Matt BH says:

I love cognac because, well, it’s not loved by many people. It’s one of my favorite ingredients in cocktails, because it hearkens back to a time when cognac and other brandies actually were common in mixed drinks. We don’t see that much now, so I try to find uses for cognac that are more reminiscent of how our predecessors may have enjoyed it.

  12. Peacelily says:

When my husband and I were first dating, the Cognac flowed freely…often! Had I had a sober moment, I might have come to my senses and not married this man — nor, as a result gave birth to our 2 charming children. We don’t drink cognac so much anymore, but on occasion a wee dram or even just inhaling the luxurious aroma of it…really brings back memories of good times.

  13. Kevin C. says:

I’ve would love to try cognac because I’ve never had it, but I’ve always heard so much about it, and this is both a) criminal and b) annoying. I’d like to decide for myself, and after an (adult) lifetime of more subpar spirits than I’d like to admit, it’s time for me to experience some real quality.

  14. I was introduced to cognac a few years ago by a cousin of mine. At the time, I didn’t have a lot of exposure to cognac overall. I knew what it was, where it originated and the basics, but never really got into it. After listening to my cousin expound upon the virtues of cognac, he let me have a taste. As a whiskey drinker, I immediately began to appreciate the rich warm flavor with a bit of an acidic/bitter taste. Strangely enough, the next taste was completely different and thus began a budding relationship with an excellent spirit.

I later found out that that my cousin gave me a taste of his Louis XIII. After that, almost everything else pales in comparison. However, I have learned to appreciate lower quality cognacs (since I obviously cannot afford a bottle of Louis XIII).

  15. Reese Lloyd says:

My love for Cognac started less than a year ago when I started making lots more cocktails for my website. Good brandy is key to some of the classic cocktails. Namely, it’s essential to use good brandy (ie cognac) in one of my favorite cocktails; The Sidecar:

    2 oz Cognac
    1 oz Cointreau
    1 oz Lemon Juice

Shake well and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Since buying my first bottle of Cognac (Meukow VSOP) for that cocktail I’ve been in love. The subtle flavors brought by the grapes married with the nuances added by barrel aging make for a spirit that’s wonderful consumed on its own or in a well prepared cocktail.

  16. Patrick S says:

I like anything that goes well with a fine cigar, and cognac fits that bill.

Although I’m probably the rare person who has had more armagnac than cognac.

  17. Denise says:

Ahh, the parallel.. the love of a good spirit with the “love” of our life! Too many hopeless and hapless unions; and, yet, how extraordinary are the two combined at one time!! Cognac was OBVIOUSLY created as a libation to be enjoyed at all those times that great memories are made and enhance the adventure! Viva la France!

  18. Alexander Martinez says:

I like sipping a top shelf cognac with a premium cigar. I believe the cognac actually helps bring out some of the flavors in a good cigar and vice versa. I am waiting for an opportunity to try King Louis XIII with a Padron 80th!

  20. Ok, so I am a HUGE lover of Cognac!! I live in Memphis, TN I think they put it in the water! I make THE best hot toddy featuring cognac (specifically Henessey). E-mail me for that recipe and you’ll never have a cold for too long! I stock my bar to the hilt with tons of Hennessey, because that’s what almost everyone I know drinks (and Crown).

So, shut the contest down and send me my free Yak already! ;-)

  21. Robert says:

I first tried cognac only a few weeks ago — at the Hollywood Brown Derby restaurant at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (of all places)!

I’ve been curious for quite some time, but just hadn’t had the opportunity.

My wife and I had finished a wonderful meal, and we were looking over the dessert menu, which included a cognac flight. I made an off-hand remark to my wife that I’d like to try that one day, and she said “why not today?”!

So, we ordered it and was extremely pleased. The waiter was very knowledgeable, and descriptions were included when the glasses were brought to our table.

    Needless to say, we’re hooked!

  22. Mike E says:

I like cognac. I really like cognac. Did I say I like cognac? I’ve never had really expensive cognac in the $100 a bottle range before. So rest assured, that $100 would be well spent. I may even spend it on $100+ bottle (I know, call me crazy!) I also really like cigars (thanks to my cigar twits for letting me know about this site and contest.) As fine cigar goes great with cognac I bet it would even go better with a $100+ bottle of cognac.

I can just image sitting in a fine leather chair, lit cigar in one hand, glass of cognac in the other. Yes you can make happen!

  23. Tiare says:

Why do i love cognac? well, i haven`t tried it very much and to love it i need a to try it more, if you can help i would much appreiate it!. I would really love to experiment with it in cocktailmixing and review it on my blog.

Great blog. I hope I win!

  25. Linda says:

I would not say I’m a connosseur – but the beautiful rich warm essence of a glass of cognac is quite wonderful – especially when enjoyed in the rich warm light of one of our beautiful candles. A tip of my glass to your cognac blog! All the best for a memorable 2009.

  26. admin says:

Thanks to all you guys for taking the time to participate. This really means a lot to us that there are so many cognac loving people out there and more wanting to try.

We will announce the winner on Monday so if you haven’t already participate you have until Sunday night :) . Once again thank you all for your time and participation.

  27. Ron H says:

As a retired government employee, I can’t afford the high end cognacs but occasionally can enjoy a VS or more rarely a VSOP – usually Hennessy or Martell with Reme Martin or Courvoisier as a change of pace.
Since my wife enjoys brandy dessert drinks, especially brandy alexanders, I can get away with buying a cognac with the excuse it’s for her.
    Good luck with your blog.

  28. Isabelle says:

I’ve never tasted a cognac and now is not the time for me to try since I’m currently nursing a newborn of three weeks. However, my husband would very much enjoy a nice bottle. He deserves it! The man is the best husband and dad for waking up every 2-4 hours to take care of my asthmatic son through his illness so that I can take care of the newborn. Everyone deserves a nice gift here and there but for this week’s midnight ER visit and sleepless nights, my man should be the first in line to win this gift. Heck if he doesn’t win it, I’ll just go buy a nice bottle of cognac for him to enjoy myself!

  29. Sid Parham says:

Most of my life I’ve been a Remy drinker VS or VSOP. Also like henessey. When I lived in German I found the German brandy Aschenbach a cheap conac substituex–but not as good as the real thing.

I’m sure I’ve had Cognac before, I just don’t remember it. I would love to win some money to put towards some, and I’d appreciate some suggestions to go with it! Maybe two or three different types for @CocoaNCream & me to check out. I got high hopes for this contest!

I’m subscribing right now, and I’m gonna go blast a couple last minute tweets tonight about your contest!

  33. jlabean says:

Wow, cognac. I can’t say that I have ever had a sip but it looks like such a distinguised drink desired only by the grown and sexy. Well, I’m grown and most certainly sexy so why not give it a try.

    I wanna win lol

  34. Vanessa C. says:

I love it because it is smooth and easy to sip! It isn’t something I can guzzle nor is it something I make a face at when I taste it. I hate to admit but when I order it I always feel kind of cool…;)

  35. Carolyn G says:

I like cognac at the end of a meal. It just goes down smooth and tastes good.

  36. Don Hornsby says:

I have only tried cognac once in my life. It was such a sublime experience. I have not been able to afford a bottle. I would love to try another sample in order to better appreciate this liquor.

  37. I think it is great you are promoting this contest. Baby boomers are more than ready to start learning about the benefits and pleasures of digestives. If you award me the $100. I promise to use it to further the appreciation and love of Cognac by offering at least three cognac tastings at MA liquor stores in the next two months. In fact I will let folks compare some very fine Cognac to some very fine Armagnac. Everyone who entered your contest will be invited to this and future tastings in other states. See http://www.heavenlyspirits.info/ for more info. cheers!

  38. Terry says:

Oh you poor souls who’ve yet to discover the joys of a wonderful cognac! When I was a girl – in the days of smoking jackets, cocktail parties and formal dinners even among the “middle class” (which we decidedly were). After one of those dinners, the women would stay at the table to gossip after a nice meal and the men would migrate to the living room for cigars and cognac. They used the crystal snifters that were much prized by my father. I never saw the women drink it during social gatherings (they were stuck with sissy-ish martinis and fruity things), but occasionally a cold Wisconsin winter’s night would find Mom and Dad would cuddle up on the couch in front of the fireplace, snifters of cognac in hand.
Finally, when I reached 40 or so, a business associate gave me a bottle of Hennessey as a thank-you gift. I spent the next month trying to find some crystal snifters (which were surprisingly difficult to find. Finally having found the appropriate vessel to drink from and with due ceremony, I began my love affair with this wonderful libation. For ten years now, I’ve relished the smooth, smoky richness of cognac a couple of times a week: Never when stressed, only when things are almost all right with my world…cognac must never be bolted or rushed…The first taste always evokes echoes of a more elegant, refined time and pleasant memories of my parents.

  39. Sherri L. Smith says:

Cognac has always been one of my favorite spirits. By way of class and sophistication it wins hands down. Just decanting cognac and pouring into a snifter is just awesome to watch and you haven’t even tasted it yet. It’s so warm and full-bodies and when it hits your tastebuds, it just coats your pallet and warms you all the way through. And just like wine, the flavor is always complex. Yeah, I love cognac. lol!!

  40. Lynn Rivera says:

Just in the early stages of cognac appreciation. And I LOVE the drink called the French Connection – Cognac and Grand Marnier!
