Cognac sales soared between 2001 and 2007 with sales rising upto 36.8%. However, due to failing economy and other factors the past two years have been hard on cognac sales. In 2008, cognac sales fell by 6.2% and 2009 has been even worst. In 2009, sales were down by 12.4%, double of what it was in 2008. According to BNIC national trade office, in 2008 148.2 million bottles were shipped as compared to 130 million in 2009. Sales dropped by 18 percent in Europe, 9.9 percent in eastern Asia, 9.2 percent in the NAFTA trade group (United States, Canada and Mexico), and 6.2 percent in other countries. However, the demand of cognac surged in the last quarter especially in U.S., where exports rose by 19 percent compared to the same period in 2008 which tells us that 2010 could be much better.
Although the sales have been on a downward spiral for the last two years, we are hoping cognac sales will bounce back this year. It would be hard to say that the sales will rise altogether but as far as we can see, cognac sales will be much better in 2010 as compared to 2008 or 2009. One of the reason is because cognac is now being pushed as drinks for the youth and not just for the rich and famous. The official cognac site, cognac.fr has been making some changes to how cognac is marketed and how it is seen by the public. For example, the Cognac Aroma Wheel shows all the flavors of cognac by season. This allows people to relate to what they like and what flavor they might be able to choose. A bit of an incentive or guide for people to choose cognac based on their preference.

Another thing that cognac.fr is pushing forward is that it is now introduing cognac as a cocktail drink. Although we are not big on mixing cognac, cocktail drinkers are one of the major target group for spirit industry and certainly not a group that can be ignored. Recently they released a site www.cognacsummit.com which introduces people to cognac cocktails, one of the best being cognac summit, of course.
We are assuming that cognac will see a much needed jump in sales due to the fact that it is once again being ingrained in the minds of young and hip. With the launch of Conjure Cognac from Christopher Bridges a.ka. Ludacris, we are sure the over all sales of cognac will see some ray of light this year.
All in all, we are positive that 2010 will be much better in terms of cognac sales as compared to 2008 and 2009. Sales won’t be as much as 2007 or years before that for that matter, but we expect to see 150 million bottles or higher shipped by the end of this year due to different approach the cognac industry is taking. And of course, cognac.com will do it’s due part to help create awareness of cognac as usual. At the end of 2009 we saw quite a jump in traffic for keyword “cognac” and other cognac related keywords which has stayed consistent in 2010. Hopefully, we will see the cognac search trend go upwards as we move forward.
Once again, 2010 will be the year of cognac, not just as a drink but as a culture. We are sure this year will be the year of cognac and the sales will bounce back as the economy bounces back from the struggles as well.
