French Entrepreneur Plans To Crack Open The $37,000 Cognac

This site is owned by a cognac lover and the contributors to this site enjoy a fine cognac every once in a while. But it’s not everyday that we can think of opening an expensive bottle of Cognac. The landmark restaurant in Paris recently decided to auction off a collection of 18,000 bottles of wine and cognac. Some that are over 200 years old. Tour d’Argent restaurant is considered to have one of the best and biggest cellars in the world. The sheer amount of bottles that were put up for auction alone points to that fact.

The bottle of cognac that we are talking about is Vieux Cognac which dates back to 1788. Cognac connoisseurs from U.S., China, Russia and other countries were present at the auction but a young Frenchman took the prize. The winning bid for this bottle of cognac was $37,000. Yes, $37,000. The young French entrepreneur says he plans to drink the 221 year old bottle of cognac which he bought at the auction.

  1. Peter Bowyer says:

    Drinking this 200+ year old cognac will be a huge disappointment. Cognac only ages when in the oak cask, not in the bottle, so if the cognac was only, say, 10 years old when it was bottled it is still effectively only 10 years old now. Sorry to be a damp-squibb on this, but there are many fine cognacs around, mostly from smaller producers, which are sold at a tiny fraction of the cost of this bottle which will be eminently better to drink.

  2. Ryan says:

    On the second photo, what is the large buildup of crust particularly near the top of the bottle? is it something to do with the way it’s stored, surely it isn’t dirt?

  3. Robert says:

    @Ryan:

    I was told it are fungi that commonly live in wine cellars. I understood that they have no influence on the cognac’s quality.
