There is no "personal preference" involved here. If a bottle of "scotch whiskey" is spelled with that E in there, it is not a bottle of scotch whisky at all. It is nitpicking in as far as spelling goes, but it's not nitpicking in as far as discussing whiskies. It makes all the difference in the world. And if you ever spend lots of money on a pretty looking bottle of said 'scotch whiskey', you have been scammed. Short of a (what would admittedly be a rare and valuable) error in the labelling of a bottle, no Scottish distillery with a semi-literate manager would ever dream of spelling it that way.
