Camus is a family-owned and operated cognac house founded by Jean Baptiste Camus in 1863. The House of Camus is situated in the Château du Plessis in the small growing cru of Borderies north of the city of Cognac. Today, the House of Camus is headed by Cyril Camus, succeeding his father Jean Paul Camus, who once quipped ” There is nothing easier than making cognac. All you need is a father, a grandfather and a great-grandfather to do it right.”
Camus V.S.O.P.
The Review
In the tradition of Jean Paul Camus, we tasted Camus V.S.O.P. Elegance neat but also blindfolded. Jean Paul was famous for tasting cognacs in a blue-tinted tasting glass to prevent being distracted by the color and to allow concentration on the scents emanating from the glass.
Here are our notes on Camus V.S.O.P Elegance.
Price
Of the V.S.O.P.s produced by the big four, Hennessy, Martell, Rémy Martin and Courvoisier, Camus V.S.O.P is priced closest to the highest end of the scale – Hennessy’s Privilège V.S.O.P.
Alcohol: 40% (80 proof)
Age: at least 4 years and includes eaux-de-vie from a variety of crus including Borderies, Grande Champagne and either Fins Bois or Bons Bois.

Overall
Camus V.S.O.P. is fresh like a VS, but more aromatic.
Camus recommends that Elegance be drunk “straight over ice or long. CAMUS VSOP Elegance is the preferred choice of bar professionals worldwide as the base for premium cocktails.”
Awards: Camus V.S.O.P won the Beverage Tasting Institute Gold Award in 2011 and the International Wine and Spirit Competition Silver Award in 2012.
Camus has also crafted a limited edition V.S.O.P. made exclusively from Borderies eaux-de-vie. You can see all their cognacs here.
