Things To Do in the Town of Cognac – Visit the Indoor Marketplace

On the left bank of Cognac, near the Old Town and Place d’ Armes, is where the liveliest indoor market in the Poitou-Charentes region takes place (Place d’Armes – 16100 Cognac).  It is a beautiful covered market, inspired by the covered markets of the 19th century and designed by architect Victor Ballard.  It is open Tuesday through Sunday.   The stalls bulge with different kinds of bread, cheese, fruit, meats, and vegetables.  You might also find homemade pâté, saucissons (thick dry cured sausages) or a variety of seafood.  But oh the cheeeessse!!!

If you love markets, you might also try the Saturday morning, open air market (Place du Solençon) in the particularly lively St. Jacques district on the Right bank.  Also, another option is the open air market at the Champ de Foire on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Remember that market shopping is a morning activity!  And, the earlier the better!  While some stalls may be open later in the afternoon, many sellers will have gone home for the day.  These markets would be a great place to pick up a few items for a picnic along the Charente River.  Markets of this nature are such an intrinsic part of life in France, so enjoy!
