Courvoisier is a cognac house founded in 1835 by Emile Courvoisier and is famous for its wide range of quality and Napoleon cognacs. The Courvoisier Château is located in Jarnac, France on the banks of the Charente River about ten miles east of Cognac. Courvoisier cognac is said to have been the favorite drink of British novelist Charles Dickens.

The Review

We tasted Courvoisier V.S.O.P. neat in a cognac snifter. Here is our review.

Price

Courvoisier V.S.O.P. is priced at the lower end of its big four competitors’ (Hennessy, Martell and Rémy Martin) V.S.O.P offerings.

Alcohol: 40% (80 proof)

Age: Courvoisier V.S.O.P. is crafted from eaux-de-vie from the Fins Bois, Grande and Petite Champagne growing crus. It is aged between eight and ten years in french oak from the Limousin forests in the vicinity of Cognac, France.

The Bottle/Label

Courvoisier V.S.O.P. comes in a bell shaped bottle with the iconic Napoleon silhouette logo on the label and on the medallion at the base of the neck. (see above)

The Color

Red gold.

The Nose (Nez)

Jasmine, peaches and floral notes.

Mouth (En Bouche)

Soft caramel, toasted almonds, browned butter, baked sweet potatoes, oak and light spice.

Finish

Courvoisier V.S.O.P has a medium length finish as the meal-like progression of this cognac reaches its end with desert flavors of raisins, coffee and vanilla cake.

Overall

Courvoisier V.S.O.P is a rich, but not complex, cognac. The aromas and flavors evoke a family gathering in a cozy farm house kitchen with a wooden table and chairs. It is not dark and brooding like Remy Martin’s V.S.O.P. offering, a cognac that conjures pensive thoughts in a dark study with leather cushioned chairs.

The rich character and simple elegance of Courvoisier V.S.O.P. makes it an easy mix with many popular cognac cocktails. Indeed, Courvoisier recommends that its V.S.O.P. be used in the Sidecar, Midnight in Paris and Champagne cocktails. We tried Courvoisier V.S.O.P. in a Sidecar and with Champagne, bitters and sugar and can confirm it makes a splendid mixer.

Courvoisier V.S.O.P is not an everyday cognac, but one for drinking while appreciating the ordinary pleasures of life.
