Petite Champagne is one of the six crus, or growing regions, designated for Cognac production in western France, situated just south of the prestigious Grande Champagne and surrounding the town of Barbezieux. Known for its chalky, limestone-rich soils—similar to but slightly less porous than those of Grande Champagne—this terroir produces grapes, primarily Ugni Blanc, that yield eaux-de-vie with a refined, fruity profile and subtle floral notes, though less intense in aging potential compared to its northern neighbor. In Cognac labeling, Petite Champagne denotes a spirit made exclusively from this region’s grapes, while “Fine Champagne” indicates a blend of at least 50% Grande Champagne with the remainder from Petite Champagne, a practice common among houses like Rémy Martin. Though not as dominant as Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne contributes significantly to the Cognac industry, offering a balance of elegance and approachability in blends and single-cru expressions from producers like Park Cognac or Pasquet.
