There Is a Cognac For Everyone (Cognac Prices)

Cognac is known as the “mother of brandy,” and often called one of the most expensive drinks. Although cognac can be expensive depending on its quality and how long it has been aged, not all cognac are priced high. Some range between $0 to $50 and then there are some that are well over $2000. We have been active on twitter and other community platforms and one of the questions that we mostly get is how much does a cognac cost? Well, there definitely isn’t an exact price to quote but we thought we would bring a cognac price menu which might help you pick one. If you are a cognac drinker you probably already know the price range but for anyone trying to give cognac a shot for the first time, hopefully there are some answers in this post for you.

The thing that bothers me about the Henri IV Dubognon is the bottle. I absolutely abhor the practice of making a “most expensive” beverage simply by taking an exceptional product and pouring it into a bottle that has been described thus:

“handcrafted crystal, dipped in 24-karat yellow gold and sterling platinum and decorated with 6,500 certified brilliant cut diamonds. ”

Sheesh. I’ll stick with my Remy XIII.

  2. Ann says:

what would you suggest as the first bottle i buy for my bf for his 30th bday?

  3. Elias says:

I bought some Hennessey Paradis Extra around my 30th Bday for $300. It smelled & tasted DIVINE! It depends what U wanna spend, Ann. Some of the XOs are around $150 & are worth it.

While I have only tasted a few of the lower priced cognacs, I do have this to say about them:

Prunier V.S. – Personal favorite, most interesting flavor (to me), little to no ‘burn’, very affordable. (under $40)

Martell V.S. – Complex, very warm-you-up feeling like brandy, tastes like it’s worth the money. Would definitely be my choice to replace any cheap brandy. (around $50)

Courvoisier V.S. – Tastes watered down, cheap. Will never try another Courvoisier no matter what the price. (under $50)

Hennesey V.S. – Overpowering taste. I think this would be a love/hate relationship with the flavor. You either love it or hate it. I didn’t like it at all. (under $50)

Clearly I am no expert and I have yet to try/taste Remy/Martin which I’m told is superb.

For a 30th Birthday I would say to try Remy Extra Perfection.

Nothing is close to it for taste and smoothness, without going into really $$$.

Once someone tries this, they will be spoiled for any other
    mid priced Cognac.

I see it on ebay for about 240-250 !
    (regular price is much higher)

Retail store don’t carry it. Louie XIII is just too over priced.

Remy XO is quite good for the low price.

  6. Denny Laudal says:

My wife bought me a bottle of Martell Cordon Bleu for my birthday. It was very smooth with a wonderful flavor. I think a bit of heaven is having this cognac with a small amount of fine dark Godiva chocolate. At our store this cognac cost about $115 US.

  7. John says:

I have a bottle (set) of Hardy Perfection. It is worth considerably more than the Perfection pictured above. (Was done in a series) What I have is from the first in the series, comes in a locking, wooden, casket style box, is bottled in a numbered, Daum decanter, includes matching numbered certificates of authenticity, as well as a signed, numbered, matching lithograph by Carzou, entitled “Cognac Perfection”. I believe there are less than 50 left in existence (from this the original series).
The Perfection Cognac is over 140 years old, and is an unblended, Pre-phllorexa spirit.

The only one I could find for sale was selling (asking price) for $39,000. The last 2 sales I could get information on, a few years ago, were in the $30K range.

    Anybody have any additional information??

  8. Peter Hellstrom says:

Perhaps you would like to include the different qualities from the Delamain Cognac House in your list. The Réseve de la Famille is, if not the best cognac in the world, at least in the top three. Delamain also provides a range of vintage cognacs that are well worth a try.
