Rémy Martin 1738 Accord Royal

Rémy Martin 1738 Accord Royal is a fine champagne cognac. The name Accord Royal is derived from a land grant from King Louis XV to Rémy Martin in 1738 that permitted them to use his majesty’s land in the Champagne region of the Charente for viticulture.

The Review

We tasted Rémy Martin 1738 Accord Royal straight in a brandy snifter. Here is our review:

Price

1738 Accord Royal is about 40% pricier than Rémy Martin V.S.O.P. and about 60% less than Rémy Martin XO.

Alcohol: 40% (80 proof)

Age: Rémy Martin 1738 Accord Royal is a fine champagne cognac blend of 240 eaux-de-vie, 65% Grande Champagne and 35% Petite Champagne, aged in French Limousin Oak barrels for four to twenty years. According to BNIC standards, 1738 Accord Royal would qualify as a V.S.O.P., because all of the eaux-de-vie are at least four years old. Because 1738 Accord Royal is also blended with some eaux-de-vie aged up to twenty years, Remy Martin would be underselling it as a V.S.O.P. and has not given this cognac a designation, choosing instead to name it after the King Louis XV land grant.

Overall

Rémy Martin 1738 Accord Royal is a delightful aged cognac with a spring in its step. The younger eaux-de-vie make it fresh and approachable, while the older eaux-de-vie provide it with a deep complexity. There is a marriage of fresh citrus tones with an aged whiskey-like character. The blend of a wide range of aged eaux-de-vie make 1738 Accord Royal an intriguing cognac for sipping and mixing.

Rémy Martin notes: “1738 Accord Royal works best with cocktails that include citrus flavors”, like the Sidecar or Sazerac.

We tossed some 1738 Accord Royal into the mix with Remy Martin’s Cointreau and created a Royal Side Car, and agree that despite the age and complexity of 1738 Accord Royal, the blend was indeed suitable and delightful.

Awards: Double Gold Winner 2014; Gold Winner 2015, Silver Winner 2009 at the 2014 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
