Martell V.S.O.P Medaillon Review

Share post:

Martell is a cognac house founded in 1715 by Jean Martell. Martell is located in Cognac, France on the Charente River.

Martell’s eaux-de-vie are aged in french oak from trees of the Tronçais style, with a fine grain that creates cognacs with lighter tannins and a delicate woody flavor. Martell also uses grapes for its eaux-de-vie from the exclusive and most prestigious Cognac appelations of Borderies, Petit Champagne and Grande Champagne.

The Review

We tasted Martell V.S.O.P. Medaillon neat in a cognac snifter. Here is our review.

Price

Martell V.S.O.P. Medaillon is priced at around the same price as Courvoisier V.S.O.P. but is less expensive than Rémy Martin V.S.O.P. and Hennessy’s Privilège V.S.O.P.

Alcohol: 40% (80 proof)

Age:Martell V.S.O.P. Medaillon is crafted from eaux-de-vie from the Grande and Petite Champagne, Borderies and Fins Bois growing crus. It is aged between five to seven years in French Tronçais oak barrels.

The Bottle/Label

Martell V.S.O.P. Medaillon in packaged in a Bordeaux style wine bottle with a medallion at the base of the neck featuring the 1715 family logo of Louis XIV and the words “Cognac Martell” embossed on it.

The Color

Copper red gold.

The Nose (Nez)

Toasted candy apple, lime, vanilla, cinnamon and cardamom.

Mouth (En Bouche)

Walnuts, hazelnut, vanilla and caramelized dried peaches.

Finish

A medium long spicy orange peel finish kicks in quickly after the initial nutty mouth.

Overall

Martell V.S.O.P Medaillon has a well orchestrated symphony of aromas and flavors to enjoy with a complex nose, subdued mouth and a racy finish.

Martell V.S.O.P Medaillon mixes surprisingly well, especially with citrus or fruit inspired cocktails. Martell suggests V.S.O.P Medailllon for use in the Toasted Lemon cognac cocktail, a variation on the side car that substitutes sweet grilled lemon for lemon juice. Martell also recommends V.S.O.P. Medaillon for mixing in the traditional Side Car cocktail and in an intriguing sounding Plum Spritz (Cognac, Plum wine or sake, topped with soda).

Martell V.S.O.P. Medaillon is the most delicate of big four V.S.O.P. offerings, owing perhaps to its use of Tronçais oak in the aging process.
