Cognac is a luxurious and refined spirit that has been enjoyed for centuries. As a protected and regulated product of France, cognac must meet certain production standards to earn its name. There are several types of cognac that can be enjoyed, each with their own unique characteristics and qualities. Here is a closer look at the different types of cognac available.

VS (Very Special) Cognac
VS cognac is the youngest and least aged of all cognacs. It is typically aged for a minimum of two years in oak barrels, which gives it a light and fresh flavor with a subtle oak influence. VS cognacs are great for cocktails and mixed drinks due to their lighter flavor profile.

VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale) Cognac
VSOP cognac is aged for a minimum of four years in oak barrels, giving it a richer and more complex flavor profile than VS cognac. VSOP cognac is ideal for sipping neat or on the rocks.

XO (Extra Old) Cognac
XO cognac is aged for a minimum of six years in oak barrels, resulting in a more intense and complex flavor profile than VSOP cognac. XO cognac is the perfect choice for connoisseurs who enjoy sipping cognac neat or with a cigar.

XXO Cognac
XO cognac is aged for a minimum of fourteen years.

Hors d’Age Cognac
Hors d’Age cognac is the rarest and often the most expensive type of cognac available. It is aged for a minimum of 10 years in oak barrels, resulting in an incredibly complex and intense flavor profile. It has a deep and rich aroma. Hors d’Age Ccgnac is best enjoyed neat or with a drop of water to release its full flavor.

Vintage Cognac
Vintage cognac is made from grapes harvested from a single year, unlike other types of cognac which are blended from different years. It is aged for a minimum of four years in oak barrels and is considered to be the most unique and distinctive type of cognac available. Vintage cognac is ideal for sipping neat and like other cognac is often paired with gourmet meals.

Cognac is a complex and elegant spirit that offers a wide range of flavor profiles and styles. Whether you are a seasoned cognac connoisseur or a first-time taster, there is a type of cognac to suit your tastes and preferences. From the light and fresh VS cognac to the intense and rare Hors d’Age cognac, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
