De Luze VS Fine Champagne

The Review

We tasted De Luze VS Fine Champagne cognac neat in a cognac sniffer. Here are our notes.

Price

De Luze VS Fine Champagne sells at the lower end of the range compared to the VS offerings from the big four cognac houses – Hennessy, Martell, Rémy Martin and Courvoisier.

Alcohol: 40% (80 proof)

Age: More than two years. De Luze fine champagne cognacs are aged in French Limousin Oak barrels that are made in De Luze’s own cooperage. Seventy percent of the eaux-de-vie is from De Luze’s Grande Champagne vineyards and the remaining eaux-de-vie comes from wines from surrounding vineyards in the Petit Champagne cru. De Luze distills the Petit Champagne wine on site and blends it with its Grand Champagne eaux-de-vie to create fine champagne cognacs.

The Bottle/Label

(See above) 1822

The Color

Shiny yellow gold. (De Luze does not add caramel to its cognacs)

The Nose (Nez)

Strongly aromatic, white vine flowers.

Mouth (En Bouche)

Oily orange, orange peel.

Finish

Very long finish as the citrus fades to light oak spice.

Overall

De Luze VS Fine Champagne has a complexity not often found in younger cognacs. Because of its bold character, it is perhaps best drunk neat and not used as a mixer.

Awards: San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2015 Silver Medal.
