Bois Ordinaires, one of the six crus in the Cognac region, spans a vast 260,000 hectares along France’s Atlantic coast and the islands of Ré and Oléron, though only about 1% of this area—roughly 1,100 hectares—is dedicated to vines for Cognac production. Characterized by sandy soils and a maritime climate, this outer terroir yields eaux-de-vie that mature quickly, often within 15 years, displaying fruity aromas and a distinctive oceanic influence. Considered the least prestigious of the crus due to its less chalky soil compared to Grande Champagne or Borderies, Bois Ordinaires Cognac is typically lighter and less complex, rarely highlighted by major houses and often reserved for blends or small-scale producers. Its name, translating to “ordinary woods,” reflects its historical forest origins and modest standing in the Cognac hierarchy.
