Do You Chill Cognac?

Date:

Share post:

Whether or not to chill Cognac is a matter of personal preference. Some people prefer to drink Cognac neat, at room temperature, to fully appreciate its complex aroma and flavor profile. Others prefer to enjoy Cognac slightly chilled, as this can help to mellow the alcohol and bring out certain flavors and aromas.

If you do choose to chill your Cognac, it’s important to do so gradually and not to over-chill it. Cognac should be chilled to around 15-18°C (59-64°F) for the best results. You can do this by storing the bottle in a cool, dark place, or by placing it in the fridge for a short period of time before serving.

It’s worth noting that not all types of Cognac are well-suited to being chilled. Younger, less expensive Cognacs (such as VS or VSOP) may benefit from being chilled, as this can help to smooth out any harsh edges and make them more approachable. However, older and more expensive Cognacs (such as XO or Napoleon) may lose some of their complexity and nuance when chilled, and are often best enjoyed at room temperature.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to chill Cognac is up to you. Experiment with different serving temperatures and see what works best for your taste preferences and the particular bottle of Cognac you’re drinking.

Personally, I never chill my cognac.
